So, when your instructor uploads a new assignment or another student replies to one of your discussion board questions or almost anything else, you'll get notified via your CANS Desktop Awareness Widget without having to login to the actual Sakai course. No longer do you have to physically search through your entire course for new activity. Now that activity comes to you through your CANS Desktop Awareness Widget.

These Widgets receive activity notifications from Sakai via CANS. Consequently, the use of CANS is required at your University before you can actually use one of these Widgets.
